The Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - UCSC) in Rome, at the Experimental Research Centre (Centro Ricerche Sperimentali - Cen.Ri.S.), organises professional training and refresher courses on the protection and welfare of animals used for scientific research (medical, veterinary and alternative methods).

The courses are of a high educational standard, certified by the main training bodies (Ministry of Health, FELASA, ECM) and comply with national, European and international regulations. Specifically, the FELASA course consists of theoretical and practical modules, structured in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Ministerial Decree of 5 August 2021 and European Directive 2010/63/EU.

These courses are accredited by the Ministry of Health, pursuant to Article 6 of the mentioned Ministerial Decree and Article 3 of the Directorial Decree of 18 March 2022, by the Federation European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) Ref. No. F076/24 and in AGE.NA.S. - Continuing Medical Education - ECM - Provider UCSC 2463.

Destinatari

All healthcare professions and personnel working in research facilities who require training and/or continuous professional development in accordance with Ministerial Decree of 5 August 2021, Decree of 18 March 2022, Article 3 and European Directive 2010/63/EU.

Obiettivi

Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will have achieved the following learning objectives:

  • in-depth knowledge of national (Legislative Decree No. 26/2014) and European (EU Directive 63/2010) legislation in force concerning the protection of animals used for scientific purposes;
  • acquisition of technical and scientific knowledge and skills in the breeding, maintenance and care of animals used for scientific purposes and the principles of laboratory animal ethology;
  • acquisition of skills in the breeding, care and environmental enrichment of animals used for scientific research purposes and the principles of laboratory animal ethology;
  • acquisition of knowledge of the fundamental principles of bioethics involving human-animal relations, animal behaviour, the value of life and the use of animals in scientific research;
  • acquisition of the knowledge and skills necessary for the correct formulation of research projects involving the use of experimental animals, with particular reference to the assessment of the severity of procedures and harm/benefit, in accordance with the provisions of Legislative Decree No. 26/2014;
  • understanding and application of the basic principles of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement) and the role, function and scientific validity of the results of research conducted using methods alternative to the use of animals;
  • acquisition of basic knowledge of anatomy, biology, physiology, genetics and genetic modification of the main animal species used for scientific research purposes;
  • acquisition of the knowledge necessary for managing the health and welfare of laboratory animals and useful for ensuring the hygiene of research facilities and colonies;
  • acquisition of fundamental knowledge to recognise pain, suffering and stress in species commonly used in laboratories and definition of humane endpoints;
  • acquisition of basic knowledge of anaesthesia, analgesia and ethical suppression methods;
  • acquisition of knowledge and skills in basic surgical techniques;
  • acquisition of the skills necessary to manage a project team, with particular attention to communication within the team, as well as effective presentation of research results to the scientific community and stakeholders.

The Scientific Committee, chaired by the Course Director, Dr. Maria Emiliana Caristo, reserves the right to evaluate candidates' pre-enrollment applications, complete with CVs, for admission to the Course.

Maximum capacity 16 participants.

Confirmation of admission will be sent by email by 23 March 2026, with the Policy and payment methods attached.

Those admitted must confirm their participation by paying the registration fee no later than 2 April 2026, at midnight. Failure to pay the fee will automatically result in forfeiture of admission to the course.

The University reserves the right not to activate or postpone the course(s) if the minimum number of participants is not reached.
